We are heading into our testing week! Please be sure to have your students arrive on time and ready to go Thursday (reading EOG) and Friday (math EOG).
During the week, we'll brush up on our test taking skills. In reading, students will listen to me read a story. As I read, I'll review all the big ideas we've covered this year (main idea, inferences, go back to the text for answers, text structures, text features, finding the meaning of unknown words, central message, etc.). In writing, I'm assigning an informative text on a specific animal for each student to research. Students will be reading the information and studying the diagrams and pictures as they take notes. Following this, each student will write a report in his own words. I'll be looking for clearly stated topic sentences, concluding sentences, capital letters, periods, and complex sentences. This will be their final writing grade. In math, all third grade classes are rotating to review skills and concepts taught throughout the year. Each night, students will receive a homework sheet to help them review a bit more. Finally, in social studies, we've discussed the three branches of the federal government, the county offices and services, and the city offices and services. We'll make a project for these concepts this week. Then, we'll put our knowledge into action. We will be creating our own city, county, and national governments to give students a better idea of how government is structured. Remember, EOGs are Thursday and Friday!!! Thanks for all you do, Amy Flowers [email protected] This week, students will rotate stations as they review our big topics during literacy time (main idea, inferences, character traits, and text structures). I'll be doing our end of year assessments which help track the growth of students with their accuracy, fluency, and comprehension skills. In writing, we'll be writing reports from our reading of informational texts.
In math, we'll finish up our unit on measurement and have an assessment. We'll begin to review all skills in preparation for the end of grade testing.*** In social studies, we've studied how our national government is ruled by three main branches (legislative, executive, and judicial). Next, we'll focus on local governments (city and county). Students will gain an understanding of officials who are elected and those appointed in our local government They will also study data presented in pie graphs and compare and contrast the budgets for city and county expenses. ***EOG testing will be May 26th and 27th. Thank you for all you do at home! Amy Flowers [email protected] This week during our literacy block, we'll be taking informative texts and touching on all the big ideas for third grade (main ideas, supportive details, inferences, opinions, finding the meaning of an unknown word, understanding how the text is arranged, text features, etc.). We'll return to Word Work this week and breaking down words by looking for prefixes and suffixes.
In writing, students turned in their creative writing stories. I'm looking at them to see if students are reaching goals we set last week (some need help in spelling, writing basic sentences, and organization). Everyone has a goal or two to reach for the remaining part of this quarter. We'll start our next writing piece this week. In math, we continue with measurement as we look at how to measure in liters, milliliters, inches, feet, centimeters, etc. Students did well on their elapsed time test but please continue to ask students questions like "if we leave our house at 5:10 and drive for 25 minutes, what time will we get to our next place?". Students also need additional practice in drawing what that time looks like on a clock. We start our final social studies unit tomorrow. Students will be studying why we need rules and laws, what the big government looks like, and what our local government looks like. This should be a fun unit! Thanks for all you do at home! Amy Flowers [email protected] Happy first week of May!
This week, I'll be reviewing text structures with students. Students need to identify if sentences or paragraphs are arranged in one of these structures: problem/solution, cause/effect, compare/contrast, or sequential order. Each day, we'll study a text to identify the structure being used. I'll be reviewing words from last week's Word Work and beginning a new story to expand our vocabulary. In writing, our class will revise and edit one creative writing piece. While they are rewriting their final piece, I will conference with each student to share strengths and weaknesses from their biography reports. Following these conferences, each student will be given a text to read, summarize, and write into a report. I want to students to write information in their own words and use a variety of sentences (linking words, simple, compound, and complex sentences). In math, students will work with elapsed time through Wednesday. A test will be given on Thursday on time. We spent 2 days last week working on telling time. Students had a bit of confusion drawing the clock face when given a time. We'll practice more this week in class. If possible, call out times for your student to draw what that looks like on a clock. In science, we'll cover environments needed for plants and review our plant/soil unit. Students will have a unit assessment on Thursday. Then, we'll shift over to social studies for our final four weeks. Math Night is Tuesday. PTA meeting starts at 5 and math games begin at 5:30. Interims will go home on Tuesday. Thank you for all your help at home. We're in the final stretch! Amy Flowers [email protected] |
