Happy Last Week of School before Break!!!
This week, students will learn to look for main ideas and supportive details in their reading. We'll use boxes to "box" the main idea and "bullets" to point to the details in the informative texts that we read. We will continue this idea in writing as well. Students will group ideas together for main ideas and then give supportive details. They will concentrate on a topic that they consider themselves an expert in (like babysitting, chess, cooking, gaming, etc.). Our class should finish this informative piece by the end of the week. I am looking for indented paragraphs, introduction, 4 headings with supportive details, complete sentences, correct spelling and correct punctuation. In math, students will work on writing equations and solving with estimation and solving with exact answers. I will be stressing that estimation helps us in the real world to give us an idea of a general number. Please help your student by using estimation as you shop...just round your numbers to get an estimated answer. This "math talk" will help connect classroom math to the real world. In social studies, we continue to add words to our economics vocabulary. So far, students have a grasp of the following words: raw material, renewable and nonrenewable resources, import, export, interstate and international trade, human resources, factory. This week, we will discuss supply and demand, producers and consumers, specialize and manufacture, and scarcity. Whew! That's a bunch of words! They work hard to understand this by drawing pictures, acting the words out with motions, and writing sentences using the words correctly. Remember that Friday is an early release day (1:15 dismissal). Thanks for all you do! Amy Flowers [email protected]

This week, students will dig more into their informative texts. In 2nd grade, they learned text features (pictures, diagrams, maps, captions, headings, subheadings, etc.). In third grade, we're looking at how those text features help them understand the information better.
We'll also be expanding our vocabulary by working with our new set of words. I'll introduce the words in a story on Monday and we'll work with the words throughout the week. It's fun to see students run up to show me they found the word as they are reading in class! In writing, we're beginning to write our own informative texts. Students have selected a subject that they are an expert in (chess, baking, babysitting, Minecraft, etc.). Then, they began brainstorming what they know about that subject. Our goal in the coming weeks is to share information with many supportive details. Students will practice writing in complete sentences, using correct spelling patterns and punctuation, indenting paragraphs, etc. The more they write, the better. In math, we continue with using all our operations this week as we solve multi-step problems. We'll have a review on Thursday and an assessment on Friday. In social studies, we're learning so much vocabulary as we study economics. Excitement is building as students are dreaming about their possible businesses they would like to start! I Thanks for all your support at home! Amy Flowers [email protected] |
