This week, we will continue reading mysteries. Students will be reading one minute mysteries and looking for the mystery (problem), suspects, witnesses, and alibis. We'll continue with our read aloud, Bunnicula. In our vocabulary lessons, we're working with the following words: sly, grateful, peer, and prepared..
In math, we'll continue working with area and perimeter. Please ask your child to act out these two concepts (area is on the inside and perimeter is the outer edges). Finding area and perimeter becomes more challenging as students are faced with rectilinear shapes (translation: a shape that may be L-shaped or T-shaped) and students have to find the missing side in order to solve for area and perimeter. They will have to use their decomposing skills to "break down" the shape into two separate rectangles. An assessment will be given on Wednesday or Thursday. In science, students will begin hands-on experiments on Tuesday with "Dancing Raisins" and "How Does Alka Seltzer Change Matter?". If you can contribute by adding supplies, I'd love the help! Here's my list: Kool-Aid packets (bring Tuesday) Root Beer (need 4 2-liters) (bring Thursday) Vanilla ice cream (2 cartons?) (bring Thursday) Clear plastic cups (bring Thursday) Container of salt (next Monday) 6 boxes of corn starch.(bring Friday) Plastic bowls (can be returned!) (bring Friday) Stirring utensils (can be returned!) (bring Friday) I'll have a few more things to add for next week.=) For Valentine's Day, Riley's mom will be pulling together a little celebration. Can you save a cardboard box this week so that it can be transformed into a Valentine's Box for February 12? It can be a cereal box, shoe box, etc. Just save one and we'll work on making some fun Valentine creations next week! Thank you for all your support at home! Amy Flowers [email protected]

Welcome back! It seems like it's been a long time since we've had school!
This week, I'll begin reading Bunnicula, a mystery about a rabbit that the other pets believe is really a vampire! We'll be diving into mysteries and taking note of the detectives, witnesses, and suspects as we jump into our next unit in reading. In writing, students will be wrapping up their informative reports on their animals. We'll share on Friday or next Monday once everyone is done! In math, we will continue with area and observing how we can multiply to the sides (length and width) to find the amount of area within a flat surface. We've used tiles and Cheez-its to demonstrate this. We'll move to perimeter following these lessons. In science, we are studying the three states of matter (solids, liquids, and gases). Once students grasp the meanings of these, they will be involved in daily hands-on experiments (from Dancing Raisins to making our own ice cream!). I may need help gathering supplies so be on the look out for things you may have at home or can send to school to help us out a bit!). Our class will be finishing up assessments this week (whew!). I'll be sending those results to you as soon as we're done on our team. Thank you for all your support, Amy Flowers [email protected] We are now back in full swing and we have so much happening in our classroom!
In reading, students are looking for the main idea in all their texts. They have to share that main idea and support it with detail sentences found in the texts. In Word Work, we're focusing on these words: about, especially, friendly, myself, really, what, then. We are constantly looking for spelling patterns and understanding rules for adding prefixes and suffixes. In writing, we're continuing our research on animals. On Monday and Tuesday, students will jot down information about diet and life cycle. On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, our class will take their notes and write a draft of their information. For early finishers, they can add illustrations, glossary, and other text features to complete their writing. In math, we will work with bar graphs and pictographs and assess this on Wednesday. We'll move on to area and perimeter following this test. Social Studies has become quite exciting lately. We are gearing up for "Shark Tank" which will be on Thursday. Mr. Burns, Ms. Bazemore, Mrs. Williams, Ms. Hall, and Mr. D. will listen to the individuals and groups share about their original products. The objective is for students to demonstrate their knowledge of entrepreneurship and persuade the adults to invest their money ("Burns Bucks") into their company. Students will work on presentations and products on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday will be a "dress rehearsal" . On Thursday afternoon (1:50-3:00), Shark Tank will take place. You are welcome to attend! Please help your student by listening to them share about their product and dress to impress that Thursday. I desire to keep it fun and keep the kids excited about all their ideas for what they could create as a business =). No stress, just lots of fun! ***Reminders*** Friday is Early Release (school ends at 1:15) No school Monday or Tuesday of next week Wednesday and Thursday of next week will be CASE 21 testing in the morning. Please strive to be on time those two days! Thanks for all you do, Amy Flowers [email protected] Welcome back and Happy New Year! I'm very excited to get back into the swing of things in room 3126. I've missed seeing your children and am ready to jump back into teaching!
This week, your students will be reading passages and finding the main idea and supportive detail sentences. We will do this by studying pictures, reading news articles, and informative texts. Our class will return to Word Work specifically studying the following words: new, knew, know, no, probably, usually. We study the suffixes and discuss synonyms. We will begin writing an informational paper about animals. This week, students will research animals: habitat, diet, appearance, and life cycle. I think our class will be excited to share the information they learn! In math, students will finish our work with multiplication and estimation. We'll review and take an assessment on Thursday. Following this, the students will begin to take surveys, create graphs from the data, and begin reading graphs for information. In social studies, students have mastered understanding of our vocabulary (import, export, interstate trade, international trade, raw resources, renewable materials, non-renewable materials, profit, consumer, product, needs, wants). Now, students will put their knowledge into action. Students will create a product or service. During the week, students will have to figure out a business strategy to sell their product or service. They will draw pictures to explain their product or service, explain what materials will be used, where they plan to sell their product or service, etc. Detailed information will be sent home on Monday or Tuesday. ***Just a note: In the next 2-3 weeks, there will be testing with middle of the year reading assessments and CASE 21. Thanks for keeping your kids in books and helping them with math....I appreciate all you do! Amy Flowers [email protected] |
