It's crazy to think that this is our first week in December! This year is flying by!
This week, students will dig into non-fiction texts. They will examine headings, picture captions, diagrams, illustrations, maps, and graphs to understand how these text features provide more information and support for the text. We will continue with Word Work and study carefully words that students commonly use. By spending time with these words, students should become better spellers and better at decoding to break down the meanings of words. In writing, students will complete a rough draft of a second opinion piece. Each student has conferenced with me and together, we've set goals to help them become stronger writers. Once this opinion piece is finished, we'll move on to writing informative pieces. In math, our class will continue working with multiplication and division strategies. I am encouraging them to memorize their multiplication facts. This will help them so much in fourth grade! In science, we'll review for Tuesday's assessment and then move on to social studies. Our next unit in social studies is about understanding our economy. Students will learn lots of vocabulary this week: business, consumer, resource, product, import, export, distributer, profit, etc. After we get a firm grasp on these words, we will work toward our next project: building their own businesses! This should be a fun unit! Thanks for all your support! Amy Flowers [email protected]

Only 2 days this week!
During literacy, I'll review our key ideas (plot, setting, central message or theme, character feelings and traits) with some great read aloud books. We'll also return to Word Work. I'll be giving the students 10 new words. Students will work on studying the words to find prefixes and suffixes and spelling patterns. In writing, I'll be conferring with students one-on-one to discuss what they did well and what they need to do to improve their next opinion papers I'll be sending home copies with my scores to give you an idea of strengths and weaknesses. Students will be turning in another opinion paper this quarter that will hopefully show improvement. In math, we continue with multiplication and division strategies. I'm now encouraging students to memorize facts. Please buy or make flash cards for your student to reinforce these multiplication facts. In science, we're wrapping up our unit, Objects in Space. We'll have a scavenger hunt to find answers to questions about the solar system and we'll review for a test. If your student did not turn in a science project yet, I will accept them until November 30th. Then, I have to switch over to social studies. Thanks for all your help at home! Have a wonderful Thanksgiving break! Amy Flowers [email protected]
This week, students will concentrate on three things during our literacy block. First, we'll be examining how a character changes in a story. We'll take a look at the "before" and the "after" changes that take place and what events occurred that made the character change.
Secondly, we'll be beginning Word Work. All third grade classes will be starting a new program to help students with spelling, decoding unfamiliar words, and building their vocabularies. Finally, we will spend time with our opinion writing. After being given the topic "Share your opinion about a favorite book", students have planned their pieces using a graphic organizer. They understand they need to use the OREO (state your Opinion, give a Reason for your opinion, back it up with Examples, and restate your Opinion). Third graders need to give 3 reasons with supportive details. Since we're using OREO as an acronym to help this remember this, I've encouraged them to aim for creating mega-stuffed oreos =) In math, we will work with balancing equations. I'll be introducing new vocabulary: variable, inequalities, and balance. Students will have a quick quiz on Tuesday and another assessment on Friday. In science, we've covered the phases of the moon and the relationships between the sun and Earth and Earth and the moon. This week, we'll move to shadows. Students should be able to explain how shadows are created, how they can change, and how the position of the sun creates various lengths of shadows. Remember that Wednesday is Veteran's Day and there is no school. Enjoy that special day! Amy Flowers [email protected] |
