EOG's are here! Students will be taking the reading EOG on Tuesday and the math EOG on Wednesday. Testing starts at 9:30 so please be on time! I've encouraged students to bring a water bottle, non-messy snack to have in the morning, and a good book to read if they finish up early. Our lunch schedule will be pushed back so that all students have around 3 hours in the room to test. If students need more time, they are allowed to have that time.
During our class time, students will work on creating their PSA's on the water issue they selected and write a formal invitation to share about their presentations. In social studies, our class will learn about people who have made an impact on history during the women's suffrage and civil rights movements. Following this, students will be asked to write a rap, song, poem, or dress up in the character of the person to demonstrate their knowledge of how this person impacted our culture. In math, we'll be playing games and brushing up on skills as a review of the entire year. I look forward to enjoying our final two weeks together, Amy Flowers [email protected] We're in the final stretch!
This week, students will start their final unit in our EL curriculum in reading. Each day, they will learn the process for creating their own PSA (public service announcement) that will be presented at the end of the unit. Students will select a water issue that we have discussed (water conservation, water pollution, access to water) and plan on a graphic organizer using their notes as a resource. This has been an eye opening module and students have become aware of global issues that others face. In math, students continue with measurement. Last week, we worked with grams and kilograms and Liters and milliliters. We continue to review other concepts as we review for the upcoming EOG. In social studies, our class will be looking at people and events that have made a significant impact on NC history and throughout our nation. I'll assign a person to each student and they will create a fake instagram post that will describe the person they have researched and brief information for their post. Reminders: The EOG will take place on Tuesday and Wednesday following Memorial Day weekend. Students are allowed to keep water bottles and a healthy, non-messy snack beneath their desks. Please be sure to have your student arrive on time to help us get started promptly. Students arriving after 9:30 will remain in the office until all testing is completed. Thanks for all your support! Let's finish strong! Amy Flowers [email protected] Thank you SO incredibly much for the lovely flowers and beautiful plants, sweet cards, and yummy chocolates! This Teacher's Appreciation week was awesome!!!!
We are slowly but surely wrapping up our units! In math, students will learn about various units of measurement (liters, grams, kilograms, inches, etc.). Students will explore and predict the capacity and mass of various items as they discover more about measurement. In science, we'll finish our plant and soil studies this week. We'll start social studies on Thursday looking at how various people and events have had an impact on North Carolina. In reading, students complete their opinion essays on water pollution. They have learned to follow a template using a graphic organizer. The class knows how to write introductions with clearly stated focus statements, two paragraphs proving their points noting the problem and the solution, and a conclusion. Students will have an assessment on Thursday to check for understanding and demonstration of these writing skills. On Wednesday, May 16th, will be an optional teacher workday and a day off for students. EOGs will be the Tuesday and Wednesday following Memorial Day Weekend. Those dates are May 29th and 30th. Please be sure to have your students ready to go at 9:15. Thank you for all you do, Amy Flowers [email protected] This week, students will work with finding the elapsed time between two events in their math lessons. An example would be "Oliver leaves home at 7:35 and drives 20 minutes to the school. What time does he arrive at the school?" We'll be practicing this all week with a quiz on Thursday or Friday to check their skills.
In reading, students will be preparing to write their opinion essay. Last week, students reviewed the major components for this piece: introduction, focus statement, proof paragraph one, proof paragraph 2, and re-stating their focus statement in their conclusion. Students are focusing on the major water issues we've discussed in class: water pollution, access to water, and population growth. In science, students will begin Grass Heads, a fun activity to demonstrate how environmental conditions affect a plant's growth. They will also work with Pollination, understanding how this process occurs to continue the plant cycle. Finally, we'll look at seed dispersal and the types of soil. Please remember EOG testing will be the two days following Memorial Day weekend: May 29th and 30th. Thanks for all you do! Amy Flowers [email protected] This week, students will bridge their knowledge in reading. In Unit 1, students learned of the three main issues related to water: access to water, water pollution, and demand for water. Transitioning into Unit 2, students will realize the need that we must act now to protect our water supply. They will begin reading texts about challenges related to water and how that compares to their own point of view about those challenges. Students will take a mid-unit assessment on Thursday.
In math, students will continue working with fractions in real-world problems and comparing them. Students will focus on this and will have an assessment on Friday or next Monday. Our final units in math include measurement, time, and recording data and these units will be covered prior to the EOG. In science, students understand the life cycle of the plant and environmental conditions as they observe their own plants growing in our classroom. We've discussed the parts of the plant and their functions. Our remaining lessons include pollination and types of soil. Things to keep in mind: EOG dates have been announced. Third graders will take the EOG on Tuesday and Wednesday, May 29th and 30th. These dates follow the Memorial Day weekend. Since EOG tests have to start promptly at 9:30, please make every effort to have your students arrive on time and ready to go those mornings. Thank you!!! Field Day is scheduled for Monday, April 30th at 12:30. Family Night at the Book Fair is Tuesday! Please come and enjoy the evening, listening to some of your favorite books being read! Thanks for all you do to support your child, Amy Flowers [email protected] Students will be focused on two things in math this week: fractions and multiplication facts. We will begin applying more real life situations in our study of fractions and have an assessment to check for understanding on Tuesday. With multiplication, students have concentrated on memorization of 2's, 4's, and 5's. This week, students will study 3's and have a quick drill test on 3's as well as a mixed sheet of previously learned facts.
In reading, students will read passages bringing global awareness to the issue of water in our world. They will be writing down the main idea along with details that support their idea. Students will compare and contrast these passages to what they have learned in their book, One Well. Finally, students will work with nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs. An assessment will be given on Thursday to wrap up our first unit on water for this quarter. In science, our class has started growing plants from a lima bean seed. Students are responsible for observing environmental conditions (watering and ensuring plant is receiving enough light). Students will learn the function of the parts of the plant and participate in several experiments to support their learning: soaking celery stalks and carnations in colored water, using activities from Mystery Science, etc.) Thank you for supporting your student at home! Amy Flowers [email protected] We are definitely staying busy in third grade! Last week, our marketplace was a huge success. Students engaged in hands on experiences as they learned about supply and demand and profit directly from their sales. We also enjoyed a fabulous variety show. There's so much talent and creativity within the walls of Douglas!
This week, students will continue learning about water and how it all comes from one well. They will begin seeing the importance of taking care of our world through our infomational text. Along with this, students are practicing their parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective, etc.). A mid unit assessment will be given on Monday to check for their understanding of finding a main idea and supportive details. In math, students will take a test on fractions on Wednesday. They will continue working with fractions but move to using fractions in real world applications. In science, we launch into a new unit on plants. Students will be able to explain the life cycle of a plant and the functions of each plant part by the end of the week. Please remember to send in $18.50 for the field trip if you haven't! The field trip is Tuesday and will be on site here at Douglas! Spring pictures will be taken on Friday! Thank you for your help and support. We're in the final stretch. Yipppeeeee! Amy Flowers [email protected] It's almost spring break!!! We can do this!
In reading, I've completed all my assessments for third quarter. For fun, students are collaborating to create their scenes from Peter Pan. Students volunteered to act, to design backgrounds, to make props, and to design costumes. Our goal is to be ready to perform on Wednesday afternoon! In math, students continue working on fractions. We'll concentrate more with equivalent fractions and comparing fractions. I'll give an assessment on Wednesday to get a quick check on how they're doing before leaving for break. In social studies, we will be looking at the regions of North Carolina and what they produce. Our studies will analyze natural resources as well. ***On Thursday, students are encouraged to dress up as a character from Peter Pan. On Thursday afternoon, all third graders will watch Peter Pan, the movie as we finish up our unit on literary classics. We'll also have an assembly at 9:30 to honor students with positive behavior. Thank you for all your support. Enjoy your break! Amy Flowers [email protected] |
