Welcome back and Happy 2018!
This week, students will be estimating, writing equations, and solving for the exact solution in math. Given real world scenarios, students will be exposed to 3 types of ways to estimate and quickly round their numbers before solving. These include friendly numbers, front end, and rounding to the tens or hundreds. This has always been tricky for students but it's what they will really need in life. Please spend time talking about how you round numbers at the gas pump, at the grocery store, and as you pick up items at the store. In reading, we'll be working on writing informative essays with supportive details. Students will take a mid assessment on Friday. This test includes checking if students can identify the correct verb tense (past, present, future) and a written piece. During the next few weeks, students will be tested on how they are doing in their reading. We'll be sending home this middle of the year information in a few weeks. In social studies, students will learn the 3 regions of North Carolina (mountains, piedmont, coastal plains). They will identify characteristics of each region and create/decorate a map showing these regions, adjacent states, ocean, major cities, a key, and a compass rose. After this students will spend time identifying how humans adapt or modify their surroundings to fit their needs. For example, a farmer plowing land is modifying the land but an eskimo building an igloo is adapting to his environment. An exit ticket will be given on all these concepts on Friday. That's all for now! Amy Flowers [email protected]

Happy Last Week of School for 2017!
This week, students will start their final unit on frogs in reading. During this unit, students will continue reading informative texts on frogs and will be creating their own Freaky Frog trading card with unique traits about their frog. The cards will be similar to Pokemon cards and the students should have fun using their creative skills to design their cards. In math, we'll work on multiplying the powers of tens. For example, 16 x 10 is 16 ten's or 160. Students will see this with visual models and work on their fluency. By the end of the week, students will be able to multiply 6 x20 and a variety of multiples of ten. Students will also work on multi step word problems. In social studies, students will work on reading maps with latitude and longitude, using the compass rose and legends. They will create their own "cities" with a map grid and write absolute directions to share with a friend. *Reminders: ***Our little class celebration will be on Tuesday 3-3;40. Parents are welcome to attend. Students will make a snowman and enjoy treats. I'm still in need of store-bought candies and treats if any of you want to contribute. ***Students will enjoy Sanderson High School's choir on Wednesday morning. ***On Thursday, students will collaborate with our music teacher to reinforce multiplication facts. ***Finally, Thursday is Early Release Day. Students will be dismissed at 1:15. Enjoy your break with your children and families! Thank you for all you do, Amy Flowers [email protected] Hello, Third Grade Families!
In reading, students will be working on a variety of skills. They will be reading closely for information and referring to the text and photographs to give responses for their answers. They will be taking notes on different types of frogs and sharing this information with class members. Using that information, students will write informative paragraphs that include an introduction, a focus statement, definitions, facts, and details. Finally, students will analyze words and discover the meaning by finding the affixes. An assessment will be given on Friday as we end our second unit. In math, we're looking at how to use the associative, commutative, and distributive properties to help us solve word problems. Students need to be able to utilize these properties as they look for solutions. Along with this, students will continue practicing addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. In science, students will have an assessment on Monday about the solar system and shadows. Beginning Tuesday, we'll begin our social studies unit on geography with lessons on relative and absolute location, longitude and latitude, and general map skills. Reminders: *Any interested students can attend the 3rd grade spelling bee on Monday at 9:15 in the media center. This will narrow down the pool of students to a group that will move on to the school wide spelling bee. We practiced in our class last week and many students picked up spelling lists to practice at home. *Thursday is our trip to the Planetarium in Chapel Hill. We'll leave promptly at 9:30 and should be back just after 1:00. Students will eat lunch in the classroom once we return. If any parent can supply a peanut free snack for our return trip, please let me know! Also, I have a handful of students who still need to pay for this field trip. Thank you in advance for helping with these matters. *I'm working on a winter break party to be held the final week of school. If you would like to contribute or help in the room, let me know! I may plan this for Tuesday since I have a couple of students out on the last two days. I'll keep you posted! Thank you for all you do! Amy Flowers [email protected] This week, students will continue with multiplication and division using real world problems. We've spent much time solving one step problems and will begin to add multi-step problems this week. For example, students may need to add two numbers and then take the sum of those numbers and multiply by four. Students will be doing two operations and setting up equations to show their thinking.
During our ELA time, students will be doing a close read, learning specific information about the glass frog. They will take their notes and work on an informative draft. Our goal is for students to write focus statements with supportive details. By the end of this unit, students will be able to take their own notes and write a three paragraph informative essay on a particular frog. In science, we will be wrapping up our unit on the solar system. Students will take an assessment this week and then we'll prepare for a new unit in social studies. Interims will go home on Monday. Please keep in mind these are all the scores that I've taken so far this quarter. More assessments will be given and there's always time to improve. Please remember to send in field trip fees if you haven't done so already. Thank you for all you do, Amy Flowers [email protected] |
