It's hard to believe that we're starting third quarter! Time flies!
This week, students will continue their studies with pictographs and bar graphs. They will take a test on these concepts on Thursday and then we'll start into our next unit on area and perimeter. Students will be using tiles to determine the area and understanding that multiplication can be used to solve for area. In reading, we are starting our new module on literary classics. We are diving into Peter Pan! Students will be revising a scene from this classic as their final performance task. During this unit, students will write opinion and narrative pieces, study character development, and share various points of view. In science, our class will looking at the three properties of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. I love this unit since it allows for hands-on experiments! Students will be up moving and acting out these properties as well as observing how alka-seltzer and vinegar and baking soda create gases with mixed with other properties of matter. Our Boosterthon launches this week! Be sure to ask your child about this daily and support our school as much as possible! This week, students will wrap up their unit on mult-step word problems in math. Most students understand how to solve the problems and the necessary steps to process through the problem. However, I've seen students making mistakes in computation. We'll be working on this during our intervention/enrichment time this week. For the students who master computations, they will work on multiplication.com to become more fluent in their math tables.
In reading, students are finishing up their second quarter unit on frogs. Last week, students took a final assessment that focused on writing skills and verb tenses. Students will place their finishing touches on a book they are creating and will design a Freaky Frog Trading Card. Along with this, students are being assessed to check on their growth as a reader. So far, I've seen data proving that our class is doing an amazing job with great growth in accuracy, fluency, comprehension, and written responses. =) In social studies, we will finish up our 3 D maps of North Carolina. Students have created awesome maps and will complete them by adding a key and a compass rose to them. We'll continue with more map studies and a short quiz this week. Thanks for all you do to support your child, Amy Flowers [email protected] I hope you all enjoyed your unexpected long weekend!
Since our school week was shortened last week due to the cold and icy conditions, we'll be playing catch up in most subjects. In reading, students will continue writing their informative essays on the freaky frog they have chosen. On Tuesday, students will write a paragraph that will be graded as part of their mid assessment. The expectation is that students start their paragraph will a topic sentence and that they will write details that support that statement. The paragraph will be about the behavioral adaptations that their frog has in order to survive. In math, students will be working on solving multi step problems by first estimating and then finding the actual answer. This requires logic and reasoning skills and it helps for students to talk it out, explaining what steps they need to do in order to solve for the answer. They all want to jump to writing down numbers on their papers but I'm trying to get them to think about what the problem is asking so they can solve correctly. In social studies, we'll be studying the regions of North Carolina. By Friday, students should be able to label the regions, identify characteristics of each region, and name major cities that can be found in the three regions (coastal plain, piedmont, mountains). That's all for now. Thank you for your support. Amy Flowers [email protected] |
