This week, students will continue working with fractions. They will be learning which fractions are equivalent to each other, the difference between 1/3 and 3/1 (1/3 is one part out of three parts; 3/1 is three wholes), and comparing fractions. I'll be teaching them a game called the Fraction Circle Game in which they try to obtain as many whole circles as they can to win, using their knowledge of fractions.
In reading, we will working on how to give a presentation. At the end of the week, students will be sharing about their revised scene they have written in class. They will be creating prompt cards to jot down notes so they can present to the class with expression, eye contact, and constant engagement. I'll be helping them create cards this week and they will be practicing their presentations. Students will be given a final assessment on fluency and writing a summary at the end of the week. In social studies, students are very engaged in our study on economics. We are adding to their concepts every day with new vocabulary (profit, customer, consumer, product, etc.). Students will be assigned the Piedmont region and begin building products that would be found or manufactured here. After spring break, students will "sell" these items in a marketplace created for all of third grade. More information will be coming! That's all for now! We're staying busy in 3rd grade! Last week, we enjoyed a visit from an awesome storyteller as part of our arts integration. On Monday, students will experience hands-on science fun with an in-house field trip! It's fun to pull in art and science into our daily routine =)
In math, students have worked hard to understand when to find area and perimeter and then following through with those computations. They have also worked to find the area of rectilinear shapes. We'll have an assessment on these on Tuesday and then begin our next unit on fractions. In reading, students have started the process of writing a review of Peter Pan. So far, they have written their introduction and their first proof (reason) paragraph. This week, we'll wrap up writing our first draft after including the second proof paragraph and conclusion. Students will take a final assessment in which they will rewrite this into a final draft. I will looking closely at revisions in punctuation, spelling, and capitalization as well as the implementation of linking words and phrases. In science, we took an assessment on properties of matter and have started our next unit on force and motion. Students are enjoying trying new concepts (adding weight, changing amount of force, creating friction) as they study this subject. I'll be taking them out to the playground this week to have them find situations when they are applying these concepts in real life. Thank you for all you do at home! Amy Flowers [email protected] In reading, students will be continuing their novel of Peter Pan. Students write a summary of each chapter and explain how the chapters build upon the previous chapters. At the same time, students will begin to read another text from the same author. Students will be writing about similarities and differences between the two texts.
In math, students will be learning about perimeter (adding the sides of a shape to determine the distance around the shape). We start off by using square tiles to create a shape and counting the distance around. After students have grasped this concept, we move to drawings and then to shapes with numbers labeled on the sides. We'll have an assessment on both area and perimeter this week. Our class is enjoying designing their Tiny Houses. They have been using their skills to find area as they create their blueprints. We'll add perimeter to their calculations and 3-D furniture this week. In science, we continue to talk about the properties of matter and how they change. We've missed science due to Boosterthon and other activities and I'm hoping to catch us up this week. Things that are good to know: Clubs will be on Tuesday afternoon 2:45-3:30. Valentine's celebration will be on Wednesday 3:00-3:40. Names are below if you need them. Thanks for all you do, Amy Flowers [email protected] Dilan Maggie Sammy Journi Camden Oliver Elijah Libby Grant Ainsley Brianna Brooklyn Jadiel Amber Allison Jacob Corrie Ramel Justin There are so many great things happening at Douglas! Please read this entire update!
Boosterthon is up and going! Please help our class and the entire school by logging into funrun.com and registering! Our class has earned extra recess and crazy sock day! Crazy Sock Day will be Tuesday, 2/6. Remember Friday is an Early Release Day (dismissal is at 1:15). On Friday, we'll enjoy an informance with science collaborating with both music and dance. The informance is scheduled for 9:30. Also, on Friday, we'll have a Douglas Dance! Friday is packed with activity! In math, we're studying area and students will have a quiz on Wednesday to see how well they're understanding it. I'm also adding a project based learning enrichment to our lessons. Students will be applying their knowledge of area to build Tiny Houses modeled after the HGTV show. All houses will be three dimensional with furnishings and rooms selected by the student groups. This will be a fun challenge! Third graders will also work on targeted problem solving skills as we divide students on Wednesday and Thursday to work on addition and subtraction. In reading, students are enjoying our novel, Peter Pan. As we read this week, students will be discussing character traits and point of views of the characters. They will also synthesize their own thoughts and determine their own point of view. On Friday, students will be given an assessment. In science, we'll be doing two experiments and discussing how properties of matter can change. We'll have a short quiz on Thursday to check for understanding. Finally, Valentine's is just around the corner! Below I've listed the roster for our class. If possible, have your child write something special about each student or create a Valentine. We'll have an art celebration at the end of the day and swap Valentine's. I found a pop art activity for a craft. If you have a suggestion for a game, please send me an email! As always, you're welcome to attend. I'll start around 3 on Wednesday, February 14th. Names of our students: Jadiel Amber Justin Elijah Jacob Dilan Maggie Ainsley Oliver Grant Camden Brooklyn Corrie Libby Sammy Allison Ramel Journi Brianna Thank you for all you do, Amy Flowers [email protected] It's hard to believe that we're starting third quarter! Time flies!
This week, students will continue their studies with pictographs and bar graphs. They will take a test on these concepts on Thursday and then we'll start into our next unit on area and perimeter. Students will be using tiles to determine the area and understanding that multiplication can be used to solve for area. In reading, we are starting our new module on literary classics. We are diving into Peter Pan! Students will be revising a scene from this classic as their final performance task. During this unit, students will write opinion and narrative pieces, study character development, and share various points of view. In science, our class will looking at the three properties of matter: solid, liquid, and gas. I love this unit since it allows for hands-on experiments! Students will be up moving and acting out these properties as well as observing how alka-seltzer and vinegar and baking soda create gases with mixed with other properties of matter. Our Boosterthon launches this week! Be sure to ask your child about this daily and support our school as much as possible! Thank you for all you do to support your child and me, Amy Flowers [email protected] This week, students will wrap up their unit on mult-step word problems in math. Most students understand how to solve the problems and the necessary steps to process through the problem. However, I've seen students making mistakes in computation. We'll be working on this during our intervention/enrichment time this week. For the students who master computations, they will work on multiplication.com to become more fluent in their math tables.
In reading, students are finishing up their second quarter unit on frogs. Last week, students took a final assessment that focused on writing skills and verb tenses. Students will place their finishing touches on a book they are creating and will design a Freaky Frog Trading Card. Along with this, students are being assessed to check on their growth as a reader. So far, I've seen data proving that our class is doing an amazing job with great growth in accuracy, fluency, comprehension, and written responses. =) In social studies, we will finish up our 3 D maps of North Carolina. Students have created awesome maps and will complete them by adding a key and a compass rose to them. We'll continue with more map studies and a short quiz this week. Thanks for all you do to support your child, Amy Flowers [email protected] I hope you all enjoyed your unexpected long weekend!
Since our school week was shortened last week due to the cold and icy conditions, we'll be playing catch up in most subjects. In reading, students will continue writing their informative essays on the freaky frog they have chosen. On Tuesday, students will write a paragraph that will be graded as part of their mid assessment. The expectation is that students start their paragraph will a topic sentence and that they will write details that support that statement. The paragraph will be about the behavioral adaptations that their frog has in order to survive. In math, students will be working on solving multi step problems by first estimating and then finding the actual answer. This requires logic and reasoning skills and it helps for students to talk it out, explaining what steps they need to do in order to solve for the answer. They all want to jump to writing down numbers on their papers but I'm trying to get them to think about what the problem is asking so they can solve correctly. In social studies, we'll be studying the regions of North Carolina. By Friday, students should be able to label the regions, identify characteristics of each region, and name major cities that can be found in the three regions (coastal plain, piedmont, mountains). That's all for now. Thank you for your support. Amy Flowers [email protected] |
