This week, students will concentrate on three things during our literacy block. First, we'll be examining how a character changes in a story. We'll take a look at the "before" and the "after" changes that take place and what events occurred that made the character change.
Secondly, we'll be beginning Word Work. All third grade classes will be starting a new program to help students with spelling, decoding unfamiliar words, and building their vocabularies. Finally, we will spend time with our opinion writing. After being given the topic "Share your opinion about a favorite book", students have planned their pieces using a graphic organizer. They understand they need to use the OREO (state your Opinion, give a Reason for your opinion, back it up with Examples, and restate your Opinion). Third graders need to give 3 reasons with supportive details. Since we're using OREO as an acronym to help this remember this, I've encouraged them to aim for creating mega-stuffed oreos =) In math, we will work with balancing equations. I'll be introducing new vocabulary: variable, inequalities, and balance. Students will have a quick quiz on Tuesday and another assessment on Friday. In science, we've covered the phases of the moon and the relationships between the sun and Earth and Earth and the moon. This week, we'll move to shadows. Students should be able to explain how shadows are created, how they can change, and how the position of the sun creates various lengths of shadows. Remember that Wednesday is Veteran's Day and there is no school. Enjoy that special day! Amy Flowers [email protected]
